Your Global Launch journey is about more than just classes and textbooks; it’s an opportunity to have exciting new experiences and make the most of your time at Arizona State University (ASU).  With so much to explore both on and off campus, it can be hard to know where to start. In this article, we have selected the top 5 activities that will help you practice your English, make connections and fully embrace your Campus Immersion program! 

 

1. Attend a Global Hangout 🪩

As a Global Launch student in our Campus Immersion program, you have access to one of the coolest activities on campus…Global Hangouts! These unique events are exclusive to enrolled students, providing a new way to connect with classmates outside of the classroom. By attending these fun, informal events you can look forward to: 

  • Cultural exchange: Get to know your classmates from around the world through engaging conversations, allowing you to expand your global perspective. 

  • Fun activities: Participate in karaoke, dance to your favorite songs, or challenge classmates to a friendly video game competition! 

  • Relaxation: Take a break from your studies and enjoy activities that help you unwind and recharge. 

     

2. Explore Arizona 🌵

More than a desert state, Arizona is packed with stunning landscapes and rich history just waiting for you to discover. As a Campus Immersion student, you have the opportunity to experience these iconic destinations to bond with classmates and see the sights of Arizona. Here are a few destinations you won’t want to miss: 

  • Grand CanyonVisited each year by Global Launch students, the Grand Canyon is a landmark of stunning sunsets, wildlife and rick cultural history.
  • Sedona: Famous for its red rock formations and vibrant art, Sedona is perfect for tranquil hiking, local art, and unique experiences. 
  • Flagstaff: Escape the summer heat and travel two hours up north to this beautiful mountain town. Thriving with local culture, Flagstaff is full of food, small-town shops and outdoor activities.

     

Take the time to travel beyond campus to experience the beauty of your new home and practice English in real-life settings. 

 

3. Celebrate ASU Diversity 🌎

As largest university in the United States, ASU offers a variety of activities for you to enjoy. These events are a great way to meet new people outside of Global Launch and practice your English skills in a social environment: 

  • Culture@asu: Centered around vibrant cultural expression and promoting inclusion, this group brings together students with special performances, sweet treats, and culturally diverse conversations. 
  • International NightJoin ASU Coalition of International Students (CIS) to experience ASU’s largest cultural festival, where students from around the world come together to celebrate their unique cultures through live performances, interactive games and cuisines. 

     

     

4. Savor local flavors  🌮

Cultural immersion is a key part of learning English. An excellent way to learn more about the rich history and culture of Arizona is to explore its cuisine. Here are a few exciting opportunities to savor local flavors during your stay:

  • First Friday Downtown: Held on the first Friday of every month in Downtown Phoenix, this event offers a range of local food vendors, artists and performers. It’s a great way to try diverse foods and enjoy the city as a local. 
  • Thanksgiving Feast: If you’re enrolled in fall session, don’t miss the annual Global Launch feast! Enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal with classmates and faculty, celebrate American holiday traditions and connect with others in a festive atmosphere. 

5. Experience sports events 🏈

The highlight of any U.S. college experience is the excitement and thrill of sporting events. Occurring year-round with more than 20 varsity sports teams, you are guaranteed the opportunity to cheer with friends no matter when your program starts. Depending on what time of year you attend your program, Global Launch also attends other national league sporting events, like AZ Diamondbacks and Phoenix Suns games. 

Apart from the memories you will make, there are many reasons to attend a sporting event, including:

  • Electric atmosphere: Put your English skills to the test as you experience the high-energy environment of a live college or national game, where passionate fans, lively cheers and team spirit create the ultimate sense of community.
