What is the American homestay experience like at Arizona State University?

Improve your language skills and immerse yourself in American culture with ASU's unique homestay experience

There are many housing choices for ASU students, but international students at Global Launch also have the unique opportunity of choosing a homestay with an American family while they study English. This means that the student lives with an American host family during their time at Arizona State University. Some experts say there is no faster way to become proficient in English than by coming to the United States and living with an American family.

“Homestay gave me a better understanding of American behavior and attitudes. I needed to improve my English for an internship, so I studied at Global Launch. My major is in business and I hope to work in international business in the future, and the homestay showed me important aspects of American culture. My language improved too,” said María, from Mexico.

Be part of a family

A homestay in the U.S. offers a unique opportunity to experience American culture from inside the household. You also get a fully furnished room that feels like home. Host families can serve home-cooked meals, practice family traditions and answer questions about American culture and customs. Families are different; some families are single parents with children and some are older couples without children.

“When I came to the U.S. to study, I lived in an apartment with Chinese friends for 3 months, but then I realized that I was not improving in my English language skills or making any American friends. I talked to my parents back home and changed my housing. Now I live with an American family and my host-brother helps me with my homework,” said Jing, from China.

With a homestay, you can have all the comforts and companionship of a stable home environment. A unique advantage to homestays is their move-in ready accommodations and laundry machines in the household. You won’t need to worry about furniture, linens, bedding or your initial toiletries, which can be much easier than a noisy dormitory, sparsely furnished temporary rental or empty apartment. Homestays provide an immediate, quiet space to focus on work or school.

Improve your English faster in a supportive environment

Many Global Launch students choose to live with an American host family. While you’re attending English language classes, staying in a homestay means you’ll get to speak the language every day with your host family and their friends. You will practice your communication skills in meaningful and practical ways and learn positive social language and interaction while navigating the local culture.

“I stayed with a homestay family for my first 6 months at Global Launch. My language level was Intermediate 1 but I improved so quickly that I passed the placement exam a second time to jump up to Advanced 1 class. I talked to my homestay family every day and gained confidence which showed in my classwork,” said Fahad, from Kuwait.

Enjoy a once in a lifetime opportunity

This is an experience that can’t be replicated in your home country or in any other form of living accommodation. You may never have this chance again. Homestays offer you a welcoming and supportive place to live and to rest after long days of study and the diversity of American culture in a setting that will allow you to create lasting memories. You’ll live like a local and immerse yourself on a daily basis in the local lifestyle of the community. The student has a new family and memories which will last a lifetime. Very often, students form close bonds with their host family and share experiences and memories that make for a lifelong relationship.

“In our special program, we studied at Global Launch for 6 months. I did not have a choice and I had to live with an American homestay family. The really fun part was that there was also another international student living in the household, so I made American friends and a friend from Colombia, Miguel. Home stay was comfortable and not difficult,” said Haruto, from Japan.

If you want to be comfortable, improve your language skills quickly and make friends that last forever, choose homestay for your college experience at ASU.
